Preventing common workplace injuries

On Behalf of | Apr 4, 2023 | blog, workers' compensation |

Maryland employees and employers should do their part to reduce workplace injuries. While some lines of work are more dangerous than others, all jobs present a certain amount of risk. Be sure to apply these tips in your workplace to cut down on common workplace injuries.

Hearing loss

According to studies, hearing loss is the most common occupational injury in the United States. Unfortunately, hearing loss typically goes undiagnosed until the employee suffers serious damage. Be sure to wear adequate hearing protection if you work in a place with a lot of noise.

Musculoskeletal injuries

Back pain leads to more than $7 million in annual workers’ compensation claims, making it the most common workplace injury. While practicing good posture and following team-lift guidelines on products is essential, there are other steps to take. Wearing quality harnesses in jobs requiring a lot of lifting can reduce these injuries.

Mental health

83% of employees in the United States report stress because of their jobs, making mental health a growing problem. Not only does workplace stress make things difficult for everyone involved, it can have lingering effects on the injured party. Reaching out for help when dealing with extreme stress is vital.

Staying safe at work

Federal and state guidelines dictate that employers put workplace safety policies in place. In addition to following those guidelines, employees should also:

  • Pay attention to your body and listen to aches and pains.
  • Practice good ergonomics in every situation.
  • Give your body microbreaks throughout the day.
  • Report any injuries to a supervisor, no matter how minor they seem.
  • Have annual checkups with your doctor.

Workplace safety is everyone’s responsibility. Taking steps to protect yourself can ensure that your body can withstand work and the years that follow.
