The devastating effects of texting while driving

On Behalf of | May 9, 2024 | car accidents |

It is not uncommon to see someone texting while cruising in Maryland. Driving while using a cell phone leads to thousands of car accidents yearly around the country.

Why texting and driving is dangerous

Texting and driving pose a greater risk than simply talking on the phone while behind the wheel due to the multiple layers of distraction involved. Visually, drivers are diverted by looking at the screen, manually by typing on the digital keyboard, and cognitively by formulating messages.

Studies suggest that texting while driving can impair reaction times to a similar extent as consuming alcohol. When drivers divert their attention to their phones, it can take up to 27 seconds for their eyes to readjust and focus back on the road. Additionally, it takes time for the mind to shift away from the distraction of the text message and refocus on driving, leading to what’s known as the hangover effect. This effect can occur even if the driver is texting while stopped at a traffic light or sign.

The sad results

Reports reveal that distracted driving contributes to over 20,000 car accidents annually, with 12% of these resulting in fatalities.

In 2021, over 400 individuals lost their lives due to accidents caused by texting while driving, averaging one death per day. Additionally, over 644 non-occupants, including pedestrians and bicyclists, were killed in accidents involving distracted drivers.

These numbers underscore the significant danger of driving while distracted. Safety on the roadways must be prioritized. If a message is urgent, it is far safer to pull over in a legal and safe space and send the message. No message is worth risking one’s life or the lives of others.
