What Are The Penalties For A DUI In Maryland?
In communities across Maryland, a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08% or higher is a criminal offense. Drivers who test above this limit or who refuse to submit for a chemical test could face criminal penalties for driving under the influence (DUI). Drivers who have a BAC of .07% may receive a citation for driving while impaired (DWI).
The penalties for a first-offense DUI are less severe than for a subsequent DUI. That being said, the consequences could have significant, life-changing impacts on your life. These penalties may include:
- Up to a $1,000 fine
- Up to one year in jail
- 12 points added to your driver record, which could lead to a revoked license for six months
Will I Have To Install An Ignition Interlock Device?
An ignition interlock device requires drivers to pass a breath test in their car before the automobile will start. As of October 1, 2019, all newly installed ignition interlock devices must also include a camera for additional monitoring.
It is unlikely that you will be required to install the device in your car after your first DUI. However, some drivers may be eligible to opt in to the program. Opting in may allow drivers to avoid serving an administrative license suspension.
